The 1985 Navassa Island DX-pedition Team invited Bob Heil to design an ultra-lightweight headset, one with a boom mic that would really cut through the QRM. The BM-10 was the result of that project; over twenty years later, the BM-10 is still one of the communications industry's best-selling headsets!
The earpiece speakers are extremely sensitive, and do not require much audio drive from your transceiver. With a frequency response of 60 Hz to 12 kHz, these earpieces yield very low distortion, and the entire boomset is so light that it's easy to forget that you even have the BM-10 on your head! The ear pads are replaceable acoustic foam.
The BM-10 is available in three versions: the BM-10 4 is supplied with the HC-4 "DX Dream Machine" element, with an aggressive low-frequency cut-off and high emphasis at 2000 Hz, for excellent pile-up "punch." The BM-10 5 is equipped with the HC-5 full-range element, which rolls off at 300 Hz on the low side, matching the IF or DSP filters of most modern HF transceivers. And the BM-10 iC utilizes the Heil Sound "iC" condenser element specially designed by Heil Sound for compatibility with the low gain found on many Icom transceivers' mic amp stages.
